I recently downloaded Skype just for fun. Some of my international friends use this program to call friends and family. So I did the same–made a $10 deposit and called a few people including one call to Brazil.

The interesting part for language learning are the “Skypecasts“. As you might imagine, these are just like the traditional chat groups except now you can hear everyone. I did a search for “Brasil” and joined a few groups. It wasn’t too exciting. But maybe other sites like soZiety, SharedTalk, myLanguageExchange, and Mixxer offer better opportunities. I’ll try to keep you posted.

UPDATE:
I joined the 2 free Skype-based sites: soZiety & miXXer. For some reason I got a call from a guy who knew Spanish and wanted to learn French. Anyway, the possibilities look good so I would recommend it. My Skype name is “erikspen”.
